  • International student enrolments top 59,000 for the first eight months of 2023

    The Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, Hon Penny Simmonds, today released international student enrolment data for the first eight months of 2023. From January to August 2023 there were 59,306 international student enrolments* with New Zealand education providers, a 43% increase compared to the full year in 2022.   

    Minister Simmonds said, “Over 59,000 enrolments, in just eight months, confirms that international students continue to find New Zealand an attractive education destination. And for the university sector with 27,535 students enrolled, where a proportion of learners may study for a number of years, there is a solid base of students from which to grow.” 

    International student enrolments have grown in all subsectors except wānanga. Comparing 2023 to 2022, English Language Schools have seen the greatest percentage increase in international enrolments, increasing by 347% from 1,565 to 7,001Schools reported a 114% increase from 5,925 to 12,662. Te Pūkenga, a 32% increase from 4,955 to 6,560. Universities, a 15% increase from 24,040 to 27,535 and Private Training Establishments (funded and unfunded), a 13% increase from 5,000 to 5,671. 

    Universities and schools remained New Zealand’s two largest subsectors for international students.  

    As with all New Zealand’s competitors, China is the largest source market for international students. In the reporting period, China was 36% of enrolments, with India (10%), Japan (10%), South Korea (5%), and Thailand (4%) in the top five. 

    Minister Simmonds said, “It is a Government priority to diversify our recruitment efforts for international students with the aim of reaching a broader spectrum of countries.”

  • Government's response to Productivity Commission report

    The Commission’s report highlighted a number of constraints and challenges across the tertiary education system. The response outlines the Government’s consideration of the report and the opportunities for improvement that have arisen from it. It lays out the Government’s plan for a world-class higher education system that promotes greater innovation, flexibility and responsiveness, while safeguarding our strong international reputation.

    In its response, Government has set out its plan for action through four inter-related areas of focus that span the tertiary education system:

    • Creating a more student-centred system
    • Meeting the needs of industry through relevant, responsive, and supportive teaching
    • Improving performance across the system
    • Enabling and encouraging innovative new models and providers.

    The work-plan signals potential opportunity for the international education sector. It sets out a plan for work to ensure the tertiary education system is open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. This will include consideration of potential changes to funding, regulatory and quality assurance arrangements, where this will lead to benefits for learners and for New Zealand. 

    ENZ has contributed to the development of the Government’s response on behalf of the sector, and continues to work with other government agencies to ensure international education remains a key part of the resulting work plan.

    This will be a significant undertaking. The Government will work with providers, employers, students and other stakeholders as it progresses the work. Engagement will begin soon, including through the development of a new Tertiary Education Strategy in 2018.

  • Generation Study Abroad and Travel Award winners announced

    ENZ has awarded five students US$2000 travel stipends: Cooper Frantz Geddes, Raquel Goutierez, Emma Hardy, William Pahutski and Phoebe Stark.

    A further nine students received US$500 from New Zealand universities towards their study costs.

    To apply, students had to submit an essay explaining why they wanted to study in New Zealand and serve as ‘Kiwi ambassadors’ on social media.

    ENZ’s Director of Education, North America, Amy Rutherford said this support is part of ENZ’s commitment to helping US students experience New Zealand universities.

    "These programmes open up new opportunities for US students seeking to study in New Zealand.”

    Launched in 2014 by the Institute of International Education, GSA is an initiative to double the number of American students who study abroad by the end of the decade.

    ENZ has provided more than 24 scholarships to US students since the programme’s inception, selecting recipients on the basis of academic excellence, leadership skills and ambassadorial qualities.

    In addition to the GSA Awards, ENZ and the US Department of State recently announced a new $100,000 partnership in support of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, which enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.

  • Allocation priorities for student visa applications

    Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has changed the way they allocate international student visa applications from students in New Zealand, so they have more flexibility and can process these applications more efficiently during the summer processing peak.  

    INZ’s allocation priorities change from time to time to reflect current demands and will be posted on their website. You can view these allocation priorities here 

    Tuition fee receipt reminder 

    When a student is in New Zealand (onshore) and submits an application for a student visa, it is a requirement to provide a tuition fee receipt with the application at the time of submission. 

    The approval in principle process is not available for students who are in New Zealand. Any onshore application should include evidence a student: 

    - has paid their tuition fees in full for one year or one programme (whichever is shorter); or 

    - that they are exempt from paying tuition fees and their education provider has confirmed this. 

    If the receipt is not provided with the application, then it has an impact on the processing and the application takes longer to be processed. For more information, you can find INZ's Student visa application information sheet for continuing international students here.

  • New advisory board to support our North American strategy

    Established by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao in 2021, this voluntary advisory board includes former Study Abroad scholarship winners to New Zealand, independent education counsellors, and senior leaders in international education in the United States. Members have a shared interest in developing educational ties between the US and NZ and are supporting ENZ’s North America team to implement our strategy for this market.  

    The 10-member board has established three sub-committees that will develop signature projects to raise awareness of New Zealand’s education brand and promote student flow between the two countries. The sub-committees cover:   

    • Alumni engagement and student experience: Three board members were former students in New Zealand and discussed ways in which ENZ and institutions could better support international students before, during, and after their study experience in New Zealand.   
    • State consortia engagement: The United States is vast and decentralised. This sub-committee is advising and assisting with partnership development around State-run education consortia that, in some States, oversee international education initiatives from Kindergarten through PhD-level Colleges and Universities.  
    • Foundation engagement: In the US, grants, research and special projects are largely funded by foundations set up by companies and individuals. Sub-committee members will use their expertise and networks to help identify foundations whose interests align with ENZ’s and New Zealand’s education and economic goals to set up funded partnerships between the two countries. 

    The overall aim of this work is to:  

    • position New Zealand as a destination of choice for students from diverse backgrounds by promoting and changing the understood narrative of New Zealand  
    • identify and develop strategic, reciprocal partnerships that align with our goals  
    • evaluate aspects of our programming and outreach related to:   
    • diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)  
    • student care  
    • help the ENZ North America team determine how we translate and explain Māori values to North American audiences, how they relate to our work, and how they can contribute to the field of international education  
    • provide a North American context to international education including but not limited to study abroad, full degree, exchange, and hybrid learning.  

    DEI is a core part of ENZ’s North American strategy for international education. We hope to move beyond perceptions of New Zealand as a country suitable for adventure seekers, to position New Zealand as a diverse country with a strong bicultural heritage, rich ideals of social justice, and an ideal education destination for students from marginalised backgrounds.

  • Alumni embrace tikanga Māori in Vermont

    The North American Whānau Council – East Coast is one of three Whānau Councils worldwide (the other two being Europe and the USA’s West Coast) and is made up of AUT alumni who attended the Noho Marae weekend at AUT’s Ngā Wai o Horotiu marae.

    There, students learned what it means to be whānau and experienced a range of Māori cultural activities including sleeping on the marae and learning waiata and the haka.

    Originally a student-driven initiative in Europe, the Whānau Councils are now supported formally by AUT and Jason King, AUT’s Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Development. Jason and his wife Andrea make an annual trip to each of the Whānau Councils’ AGMs.

    Lewis Gibson, ENZ Field Director, North America, attended this year’s events with students from Champlain College (currently hosting its first Māori student on campus) and the University of Vermont (UVM) where AUT has exchange programmes.

    “The Whānau Councils act as local communities for alumni to maintain their connections to each other, New Zealand and Māori culture.

    “They’ve also been instrumental in helping US universities connect with their own tangata whenua; the Chief of the Nulhegan Abenaki tribe, Don Stevens, attended Whānau Council events this month to show support. For these students, it was the first time many had had any interaction with the Abenaki.”

    Lewis said the experience these students had at AUT’s Noho Marae has profoundly impacted them, turning them into lifelong advocates for New Zealand, its education system and Māori culture.

    “By embracing an indigenous culture on the other side of the world these students have found a home away from home and a whānau they belong to.”

    This sense of belonging has remained long after those students left New Zealand. Today, a large number of alumni from both UVM and Champlain College have become teachers, sharing Māori culture in their own classrooms with their students.

    “By incorporating lessons and culture from New Zealand, these alumni are exposing US students to the benefits of a New Zealand education, as well as actively sharing their positive New Zealand education experiences with their peers in the wider community.

    “This encourages more US students to participate in study abroad opportunities in New Zealand, and further entrenches the kiwi connections in Vermont,” Lewis said.
