• “Feedback is a gift” - Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s 2023 Sector Survey

  We would like to thank the many respondents who took the time to answer the survey, including universities, schools, Private Training Establishments, English Language Schools, education product and services companies, Te Pūkenga, peak bodies, and regional economic development agencies.  

  Undertaken annually, the survey helps ENZ to understand what is important to the sector, what services and support provide the most value, and where there are opportunities for ENZ to improve our offerings.  

  In 2023, 73% of the sector agreed that ENZ’s services and support over the past year had added value to their organisation, Business and market advice and E-News were ranked as the most useful services. 

  Areas such as ENZ’s in-market advice and informed intelligence were highlighted as being helpful to the sector in making timely, informed decisions, as is the support to re-establish and consolidate presence in existing markets while exploring new growth opportunities. The opportunities that ENZ provides for international partnerships was also highlighted as helpful.  

  The survey is also important in identifying the areas in which the sector would like ENZ to focus more. This included more advance notice on upcoming events and opportunities, providing more clarity on the range of services and support available and building more strategic partnerships across the wider sector.  

  Sharon-May McCrostie, ENZ’s Director of Sector Engagement said that while this survey is held annually, ENZ welcomes ongoing feedback on how ENZ can best support the New Zealand international education sector to grow. 

  “These surveys are considered an important scorecard for us to understand where we are meeting expectations with our stakeholders but also opportunities to improve our support to the sector. 

  “Looking ahead to 2024, the sector has said it would like to see us improve our engagement around integrating views of the sector in our planning and promoting the value that the international education sector brings to NZ,” added Sharon-May.

  Survey finds prospective students put the emphasis on welcome and teaching quality

  A survey of 62,000 prospective international students found that the most important factor in deciding between destinations is how welcoming and safe a study destination is. The survey also finds that teaching quality trumps university ranking for the majority of prospective students.

  University alliance in Asia aims to boost regional ties and global influence

  Fifteen universities across Asia have formed a consortium to better facilitate mobility and enhance academic and research collaboration in the region. The alliance includes institutions in China, Korea, Japan, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kazakhstan.

  Canadian universities see surge of international students

  Canadian institutions are seeing jumps of 25 per cent or more in admissions of students from abroad, with record levels of interest from American students. “Canada may be a middle ground between the United States and Europe,” said Ravin Balakrishnan, the chair of computer science at the University of Toronto. “We have the energy and tech-savvy of the U.S., but the safety of European countries,” he said.

• New Zealand is safe and open for business

  New Zealand’s international education industry is open for business as usual, says John Goulter, ENZ General Manager Stakeholders and Communications.

  “New Zealand remains a safe and welcoming place for international students to live, study and travel around,” he emphasised.

  “While last Monday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake gained global media attention, within a day of the quake, daily life in almost all parts of New Zealand had returned to normal.

  “All of New Zealand’s gateway cities of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown were open and all regional airports were operating – meaning people could continue to fly between destinations.

  “New Zealand is remarkably resilient to these kinds of events.”

  He emphasised that the earthquake was not centred near areas of high population density and its damage was not widespread.

  “Two-thirds of international students are in Auckland which was unaffected.

  “Similarly, Christchurch has been largely unaffected and the city is functioning as normal.”

  ENZ had received no reports of any injuries to staff or students at schools, private providers or universities.

  The earthquake had a big impact on Kaikoura, a small settlement several hours’ drive north of Christchurch in the South Island, and recovery work there would be ongoing for some time.

  There had also been aftershocks, which were expected.

  In Wellington, a small number of buildings in the central business district had sustained some structural damage, and these were being managed with minimal impact to normal business and daily life in the city.

  Mr Goulter said that Education New Zealand had been working closely with its international offices to share updates on the earthquake to keep our key markets informed, and to monitor media coverage and perceptions of the quakes.

  “We would like to reassure international agents, media, parents and potential students that New Zealand continues to be a safe, high-quality educational destination.”

  He suggested that international students due to travel to New Zealand to make direct contact with their education provider for further information, or to monitor the Ministry of Education's website for updates.

  Mr Goulter said he was confident that the recent earthquake activity would have minimal if any long term impact on New Zealand’s international student market.

• Prime Minister’s Scholarships extended to Latin America

  The scholarships will mean more young Kiwis are exposed to Latin American countries and cultures, and this will strengthen New Zealand’s ability to engage with key Latin American trading partners in the future.

  The Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Latin America (PMSLA) will complement the successful Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia initiative. Under that programme 751 scholarships for Kiwi students to study in Asia have been awarded since it was implemented in 2013.

  The expanded scholarships programme will strengthen international linkages with an area of the world which is becoming increasingly important for New Zealand trade and business. Latin American and Asian destinations are all just one direct flight away, making them more accessible and easier to work with.

  The scholarships are part of the $761.4 million ‘Innovative New Zealand’ budget package, $43.5 million of that is to develop stronger international connections for tertiary students. This includes the introduction of the PMSLA, the expansion of the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and the introduction of three Centres of Asia Pacific Excellence at universities.

  Nominations for the first round of the PMSLA will open on 1 September 2016 and will be awarded in November 2016. The scholarships will be administered by Education New Zealand. More information about the scholarships can be found here.

• NauMai NZ has a brand-new look 

  We are excited to share that NauMai NZ, ENZ’s student experience digital platform, has undergone a refresh and has a new look and feel, bringing it in line with the wider ENZ brand family. Check out its new look here.

  NauMai NZ provides clear, timely information and advice about the things that international students want and need to know - arriving in New Zealand, study and education, health and wellbeing, New Zealand and Māori culture, exploring New Zealand, making friends, safety, money, work, and much more. It links to expert resources where appropriate and is designed to complement information provided by education providers. 

  NauMai NZ was launched four years ago and since then has had one million page views.  

  Student Experience Manager, Ross Crosson says the aims and objectives of NauMai NZ have not changed.  

  “NauMai NZ is still about providing trusted, accurate information to support student wellbeing, bridge the gap between expectation and reality, enable social connection, and improve student experience outcomes. The revamp is about being responsive to the needs of a wider range of students who are studying with New Zealand, not just in New Zealand” he adds. 

  Alongside the new look, new content has been added including, 

  • Life on campus (orientation, clubs, student associations)​ 
  • How to maximise your experience (goal setting and support options)​ 
  • Road safety​ 
  • Outdoor safety (including water safety, hiking and tramping, hunting/mahika kai)​ 
  • Online study for offshore students​ 
  • Global Pathways 

  “Just as we have over the past four years, we will continue to add new content to NauMai NZ to meet student need and expectation. The site is always evolving and feedback is welcome” Ross says.
