October update from Immigration New Zealand
Update on student visa processing*
Since the borders reopened on 1 August 2022, we have received 7,710 student visa applications from international students outside New Zealand. We have decided 4,885 of these applications with over half of these decisions being made in less than 4 weeks and 95% being made within 7 weeks.

Submit your student visa application for early 2023 study now
Thank you to everyone who has followed our guidance around waiting to submit applications for a student visa for 2023 study. We now encourage students who are intending to begin their studies in New Zealand in early 2023 (up to the end of March) to submit their applications. If you have all your documents ready (including your offer of place and up to date financial evidence) then apply now to give enough time for your application to be processed before your intended travel date. Follow the checklists on the INZ website Student visa information | Immigration New Zealand for guidance on what to provide with your application.
Sending your passport to INZ
We have changed the rules for when you need to send us your passport. Now, if you are applying for a student visa you only need to send us a high-quality scan of your passport, you will not usually need to send your actual passport to be scanned at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) or an Immigration New Zealand office. This is a temporary measure to help with visa processing. Please note applicants may still receive an automated letter asking for a passport to be submitted. This is not required. We are updating the letter to address this issue.

What’s on offer at NZIEC 2018?
NZIEC 2018 centres on the theme of Inspiring Global Citizens, and how we can leverage our international education activity to foster global citizenship across the diverse communities of New Zealand.
We’ll kickstart conference by exploring how we can have global impact from New Zealand with our Inspire Keynote Speaker Yoseph Ayele, Chief Executive of the Edmund Hillary Foundation.
The digital journeys of international students will be under the microscope by Dr Shanton Chang from the University of Melbourne. Dr Chang will share his surprising insights into the online behaviours of international students as they move across countries.
We’ll investigate what our industry can learn from Xero’s Anna Curzon as she outlines how we can develop partnerships for global success. The Xero experience in developing partnerships with customers, partners and others has helped make it Forbes’ Most Innovative Growth Company for two consecutive years.

We’re also bringing the international student voice into our plenary sessions with international students talking to delegates about their experiences living and studying in Aotearoa. We anticipate this will provide interesting and heartfelt life stories that delegates can reflect upon.
Our Expo Hall has sold out with an amazing array of partners joining us to connect and engage with delegates over the two days. And, as ever, we have a surprise or two up our sleeves – stay tuned in the lead-up to conference to find out more!
Programme format changes
This year, we’ve put back-to-back complementary breakout sessions together into 1hr 20-minute sessions. While you are still free to sneak between sessions, we hope this format will help reduce the amount of time you have to spend navigating around the venue and allows you time to really focus on a particular theme.
We’ve also staggered the timing of our pre-lunch breakout sessions, with some starting 15 minutes earlier than others to help reduce those dreaded lunch queues.
Pre-conference workshops
Remember to check out the pre-conference workshops offered by our programme partner, AFS New Zealand. These workshops are a great way to grapple with global competence in an in-depth way prior to conference kicking off the following morning. You can register for these breakouts direct with AFS or during registration.

International student enrolments from India
Between January and August 2024, overall international student enrolments from India grew 34% to 10,640 from 7,930 enrolments in the full year period for 2023. Enrolments for universities grew around 64%, private training establishment enrolments grew 36% and Te Pūkenga enrolments from India grew 15% over the same period.
86% of Indian students in New Zealand rate overall experience positively
Indian students are thriving in New Zealand. The New Zealand International Student Experience Survey 2024 reveals that 86% of Indian students rated their overall experience in New Zealand positively.

Register for ISANA NZ Conference
The conference will be held at Harbourside Function Centre, Wellington from 5-6 September 2019.The theme is ‘Professionalisation of the International Education Sector in New Zealand: Promoting an integrated NZ Inc. approach to student wellbeing.’
Keynote speakers include
- Bariz Shah (New Zealand) – President of the University of Canterbury Muslim Students Association, Bariz became a spokesperson for the Muslim student community following the tragedy of March 15.
- Marcela Lapertosa (Australia) – former Director of Education and Intercultural learning at AFS, Marcela will share insights she gained leading the development of intercultural competence programmes for students, families and staff around the world.
- Lian-Hong Brebner (New Zealand) – Diversity Manager at Auckland University of Technology, Lian-Hong will outline strategies for promoting cultural intelligence within institutions and the wider international education sector.
- Dr Paula Durance (Australia) – Consultant to international education providers, Paula is a respected international education professional. She will be exploring strategies for developing professionalism in international education.
There will also be a range of breakout sessions and workshops from practitioners, policy advisors and educators, including updates on work and study opportunities, tailored mental health practice, strategies for enabling social connections and overcoming communication obstacles and accommodation insights in relation to Code compliance.
