  • ENZ hosts annual TEI Manaaki Scholarship workshop 

    For the next two days (14-15 September) participants from all eight universities and Te Pūkenga will be reviewing good practice and experiences in sessions led by speakers from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the Manaaki Scholarships team at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), Manaaki scholar alumni and the Skills Consulting Group.  

    The workshop is the first to be hosted by ENZ since it took over operational management of the scholarships programme from MFAT last November. The Manaaki Scholarships represent the New Zealand government’s single largest investment in international scholarships and have been awarded for more than 70 years.   

    ENZ Manaaki Scholarships Manager, Julia Moore said the programme had been designed to ensure the maximum interaction between participants and presenters.  

    “It is an opportunity for all parties to come together, track progress achieved since the change in management, plan ahead for the future and share experience in key areas such as admissions processes, orientation and pastoral care.” 

    Speaking at the opening of the workshop, ENZ Manukura – Chief Advisor Māori, Ed Tuari said the best way to honour and build on past achievement was by continuing the development of the Manaaki Scholarships as a world-class scholarship programme. 

    Manaaki is about integrity, trust, reciprocity, and sincerity. It is about the way you respect a person and acknowledge who they are and where they come from that honours them and keeps your reputation and integrity intact.” 

     

    Manaaki is not a single act of hospitality; it is a culture of care and respect.” 

  • Korean students study in New Zealand under English scholarship programme

    From mid-July, a group of 150 Korean students will attend intermediate and high schools in the Waikato, Nelson-Marlborough, Manawatu and Canterbury regions over eight weeks as part of a Korea-New Zealand English Scholarship Programme.

    The scholarship programme is an outcome of a three-year education cooperation agreement (2016-2018), which is part of the Korea New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that was signed in December 2015. Earlier this year, the two governments agreed to extend the programme for one more year to 2019.

    Since the scholarship programme’s launch in 2016, 449 Korean students have visited New Zealand. The programme is operated by the Schools International Education Business Association (SIEBA) on ENZ’s behalf.

    On 29 June, Korean students attended a pre-departure orientation session in Daejeon, where New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Philip Turner, congratulated the students and gave them an overview of school life in New Zealand. 

    ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Korea, Kay Lee, said it was fantastic to think that at its conclusion the programme will have supported 599 Korean students to experience life in regional New Zealand.

    ENZ’s Business Development Manager, Richard Kyle, said: “The scholarship programme is a great opportunity for Korean students to immerse themselves in a new culture, new language, and new experiences in New Zealand, and equally for Kiwi children to learn about the culture and lives of their Korean classmates.” 

    During their stay with Kiwi homestay families, the visiting students will be encouraged to share photos, study experiences and visit impressions through a mobile app as part of a Study in New Zealand competition.

  • Nine PTEs added to China study abroad list

    “This is an excellent outcome,” says ENZ's Regional Director Greater China – Alexandra Grace.  “It has been a challenging area of work, requiring close coordination between ENZ and NZQA and robust discussions with China’s Education Ministry.  Working closely, we were able to secure this outcome to the benefit of more of our outstanding private tertiaries.”

    The Jiaoyu Shewai Jianguan Xinx Wang (JSJ) Study Abroad website is maintained by the Chinese Ministry of Education and lists high quality tertiary education providers outside of China. Chinese students who are considering tertiary study overseas often use the website to decide where to study.

    The nine education providers that will be added to the JSJ Study Abroad website are:

    • Media Design School

    • New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine Limited

    • New Zealand School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

    • New Zealand Tertiary College Limited

    • SAE Institute

    • South Pacific College of Natural Medicine

    • The New Zealand College of Massage Limited

    • UUNZ Institute of Business Limited

    • Wellpark College of Natural Therapies Limited

    These PTEs join 32 other tertiary institutions on the New Zealand page.

    All the education providers being added to the website meet criteria that have been agreed with the Chinese Ministry of Education. The Chinese Ministry of Education will only add education providers which meet the following criteria:

    • be signatories to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students

    • have achieved ratings of at least Confident for both educational performance and capability in self-assessment in their most recent NZQA external evaluation and review report (Category 1 and 2 providers)

    • offer degrees (at Level 7 or above of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework)

    • not be specialist English language schools

    • not be distance learning schools

    • not deliver religious programmes.

    Throughout negotiations NZQA has advocated for the adoption of a criteria-based approach for the listing of further New Zealand PTEs. The rationale behind this approach is to allow for a regular review process, ensuring that PTEs on the list continue to meet criteria expected by the Chinese Ministry of Education, and allowing additional PTEs to be added to the list as they meet the criteria.

    The announcement of the addition of nine further high-quality PTEs is a positive step. ENZ and NZQA will continue to negotiate with the Chinese Ministry of Education on the use of the criteria as the basis for regular review and updates to the JSJ Study Abroad website list to ensure that prospective students and parents are able to access accurate and up-to-date information on their study options in New Zealand.

    Providers who are not listed on the website can point to their EER report and the following text on the JSJ website when dealing with Chinese students and partners:

  • New deal will bring over a million New Zealand books to Chinese schools

    To bring the books to China, Global Education Systems (GES) is working in partnership with a leading Chinese foreign languages publisher, Foreign Language Teaching Research Publishing (FLTRP).

     The series, which includes both hard copy and digital books, will support existing government text books for English language learners in Chinese schools.

     “We aim to equip students in China with a burning desire to become life-long readers and writers in English,” said GES Director Tracy Strudley.

     “The focus of our material is to engage students with meaningful texts that teach in-depth language comprehension and writing.”

     The deal marks the largest print run for an Australasian education publisher to date – totaling 1.632 million books.

     The series was developed by author and GES Product Development and Education Director Jill Eggleton QSO. Eggleton was the 2015 recipient of the Storylines Margaret Mahy Medal for lifetime achievement and an outstanding contribution to New Zealand children’s literature and literacy.

     “The Key Links series is well designed and follows many of the requirements in the newly released National Curriculum,” said Zhang Lixin, Director of FLTRP’s Basic Education Publishing Division.

    Eggleton, Strudley and Steve Jones, NZ Trade Commissioner based in Guangzhou, will travel to Shenzhen on 17 April for the launch of the Key Links series at a foreign language teaching conference. Some 400 administrators and teachers across China will receive training in the Key Links Literacy learning approach ahead of a May release into Henan province schools.

    Negotiations between GES and FLTRP began during a trade mission sponsored by Education New Zealand in June 2016.

    Education technology is an important, and growing contributor to the trade relationship between China and New Zealand.

  • ENZ hosts Kiwi orientation for Tokyo students

    ENZ hosted an orientation for 33 high school students about to embark on a year of study in New Zealand at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo last Friday. 

    From education to lifestyle, representatives from ENZ and MFAT spoke to the students about everything New Zealand has to offer.

    The students are part of the “Next Generation Leadership” programme organised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education. Under this programme, some 200 high school students in Tokyo are selected annually to receive scholarships for one year of study in the US, Canada, Australia – and as of this year, New Zealand, which will receive 40 students starting February.

    The New Zealand study orientation included an interactive Q&A session discussing pathways to New Zealand universities (including ITP and PTE options), outdoor activities available in New Zealand and how computers and technology are incorporated in the classroom. One student made a speech in English during the day, expressing her excitement for her adventures in New Zealand.

    Ahead of Japan’s hosting of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics, the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education has been busy working with the city’s school sector to promote international education and student exchange.

    To further strengthen its relationship with the Board, ENZ will be securing a new partnership under the Arrangement on Education Cooperation. The partnership is set to be signed by ENZ and the Board next month with a reception to be held at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo.

    Misa Pitt, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, said the partnership with the Board of Education in the nation’s capital is a significant milestone for ENZ Japan.

    “This partnership will provide a fantastic opportunity for us to promote future expansion of the existing student/teacher training programme in New Zealand as well as to support the Board’s new initiative on inbound student recruitment to Japan.

    “We look forward to working with SIEBA, English New Zealand and other groups to introduce the exciting new programmes available in New Zealand.”

  • Saudi event changes

    The 2016 International Exhibition and Conference on Education (IECHE) – traditionally the key recruitment event for the year – has been cancelled by the organisers.

    To ensure New Zealand continues to be promoted as an education destination to prospective students in 2016, ENZ is considering participating in IGEC’s upcoming International Educational Expertise Forum (IEEF) events in Jeddah and Riyadh on 24 - 27 April 2016.

    These events are expected to attract industry participants from Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Turkey and South Africa, as well as New Zealand.

    The IEEF events have received approval from the Saudi Ministry of Education and organisers are able to issue invitations for visas.

    To coincide with the IEEF events, ENZ will host an Agent Seminar at the New Zealand Embassy in Riyadh, and will support in-market networking with key scholarship sponsors.

  • Notice: Brief shut down of INZ’s online client accounts in late May

    This means that education agents and providers will not be able to access their online client accounts for four days, from 8am NZT on Saturday, 28 May.

    New online applications will not be possible during this period, except for working holiday visas and skilled migrant category expressions of interest. Hard copy paper applications will still be accepted.

    IDme

    IDme will significantly improve INZ’s ability to confirm a person’s identity, making it a vital new protection against identity fraud by visa applicants.

    The system will enable biometric information (face photographs and fingerprints) from visa applicants to be uploaded online and automatically matched against personal information already held by INZ.

    IDme will be released in two tranches – the first release, from 31 May, will enable automated matching of all biographic details (personal data), fingerprints and a small volume of facial photographs. The second release, in the last quarter of 2016, will allow automated matching of all photographs.

    IDme is the latest in a series of business changes known collectively as Immigration ONLINE. Better customer service is a key aim of these changes, which include:

    • online applications for student, work and visitor visas

    • third party “apply on behalf” for INZ partners such as immigration advisors, and

    •  eVisas (passport-free and label-less visas).

    The next new service will enable families and tour groups to apply online using a single form. Once this happens, 80 percent of visa types by volume will be available online.

    Sitting behind these new services are business changes that standardise best practice and apply consistent, measurable quality standards across INZ. Traditional visa processing tasks will reduce as customers increasingly go online to apply for visas and check their visa status.

    New acceptable photo rules

    Photos can still be submitted online along with application forms, but they must now meet strict approval guidelines to avoid rejection by the system. INZ recommends that applicant photos be taken by a professional photographer or a business set up to take passport-quality photos.

  • Malaysian student teachers value NZ experience

    While it was not much money, it motivated them, according to Mdm Anis Abdullah, co-ordinator of the Kiwi Experience Project at the Institute of Teacher Education (Batu Lintang) in Kuching, who accompanied the students.

    Over the next year they raised their target of 100,000MYR or $NZ 30,000. That first day they rented out the bikes for less than 1 ringgit – so the fact there were 12 takers was the incentive to continue.

    During the March visit to Dunedin the third-year primary-level English language student teachers gained insights into New Zealand culture, education techniques, ways of managing pupil behaviour and various literacy programmes. The tour ended with the students performing three songs, including a waiata, at North East Valley Normal School.

    Aged 21 to 25, many will be posted in rural areas with added responsibilities as school administrators and for pastoral care of pupils. “English is part of the curriculum in both primary and secondary schools now but in 2016 it will become compulsory and pupils will be required to pass English language studies to graduate from high school,” according to Mdm Anis.

    She said the trip enabled the students to have the total Kiwi experience.  “I believe in the holistic approach to education where learning entails much more than just what you study in class. Trips like this enrich an education. New Zealand is the most expensive benchmark option for us, but it is the best because we would like our students to see first-hand how the early literacy and reading recovery programmes are carried out here.  Besides, New Zealand is a very beautiful and safe country and the warmth of the Kiwis always made us feel very welcomed.”

    This visit was the first time some had left their home region of Sarawak. “They have had a great time and many said that when they graduate and have worked for a few years, they will come back.”

    Mdm Anis said commonalities existed between the Malaysian and New Zealand teaching ethos. “It is about teachers being informed, knowledgeable and global citizens. Our teacher development programmes focus not only on intellectual aspects, but  also on developing values and the emotional, spiritual and physical aspects – similar to the ‘life-long-learner’ concepts in New Zealand.”

    Mdm Anis hopes the Malaysian Ministry of Education will plan another twinning programme for Malaysian students to study at the University of Otago, possibly at Masters level. She previously helped co-ordinate such a programme at the institute where she works, that ended in 2013, for 117 student teachers to complete half of their Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, TESOL, degree at Otago.
