Summer in NZ
The student retention workstream, a key focus of the Government’s Recovery Plan for international education, has delivered new resources, partnerships and online activity to support international students (and providers) over summer.
Alongside the Summer in NZ initiative, ENZ has been facilitating Instagram Live sessions on social media focused on the themes of wellbeing, employability, skill development and keeping students connected with one-another. For the schedule, visit the Summer in NZ page on the ENZ website, and watch on the StudyinNewZealand Instagram account (@studyinnewzealand). Further sessions will continue over summer.
A Tencent livestream with the theme of how to spend your summer in New Zealand was hosted by students on the NauMai NZ WeChat mini programme. Another two upcoming livestreams in the new year will feature how Chinese students are spending their summer and celebrating Chinese New Year in New Zealand.
ENZ has also partnered with LinkedIn and secured a number of LinkedIn Learning licences. We are now offering these to international students, via providers, free of charge to use over the summer period. This platform is used by education providers across the world to complement their existing courses.
ENZ has also been working with AFS New Zealand to deliver the Global Competence Certificate. The first course facilitated by Massey University began at the end of November. New NauMai NZ pages, developed in conjunction with providers and regional networks, have been added to NauMai NZ (under Summer in NZ), providing advice and information on activities and opportunities to engage and connect students over summer. Students whose programmes are finishing this year are also being encouraged to consider further programmes of study in New Zealand.
The Your Great Kiwi Summer Fair was held at the end of October. The audience was highly engaged, with initial feedback reporting that the fair was a useful source of information. Feedback will help inform future events with international students in New Zealand.
Since the fair, Northland Inc and Study Auckland have launched BeKiwi, a one-stop digital platform for international students looking for travel and volunteering experiences in the Northland and Auckland regions.
We understand this summer will be a very different one for many international students. We thank you for your support and encourage you to continuing sharing this information and these resources with them, as we stand together with our international students to make the most of their time here.

Issues of race, heritage and identity connect students across the seas
There was a total of 87 participants, made up of members of UMD’s College Success Scholars’ Programme, a cohort of 100 Black and Latino men, and students of Jason King’s Māori Leadership course at AUT.
ENZ Director of Engagement – North America, DuBois Jennings, described the event as profoundly moving.
“It was incredible seeing the two cohorts of students sharing both their similar and unique experiences,” he said.
“This is exactly the kind of engagement Education New Zealand is looking for in terms of our goal of creating global citizens in New Zealand and developing mutual understanding between underrepresented students in both countries. We're excited to see what else can be done in the future and hopeful that this is the beginning of a long and meaningful relationship between UMD and AUT.”
UMD have expressed some interest in developing a programme based on this event that looks to develop inter-cultural competency and a better understanding of racial issues.
The success of this programme aligns well with ENZ’s goals in the United States of repositioning New Zealand as a recognised leader in diversity, equity and inclusion.
“It also aligns nicely with the internationalisation stream of the New Zealand Government’s Recovery Plan,” DuBois said. “While borders remain closed, we are committed to building on our connections within the US, as we continue to find new opportunities for students and educators from the US and New Zealand to meaningfully engage.”

Following his own path – International student builds life, family, and community in New Zealand
Luke Qin has never been afraid of a challenge. Born in Sichuan, China, his childhood was a rich mix of classical Chinese literature, table tennis, badminton, basketball, football, and music.
Early intensive schooling means he can read, write, speak, think and dream in Chinese and draw on traditional Chinese virtues, but a desire to follow his own path, experience something new and explore education options overseas, led him to New Zealand as a high school student.
Selecting New Zealand was a relatively easy choice at the time – English-speaking, safe, ‘clean and green’ and affordable – it ticked all the necessary boxes. But his desire to test himself drew him to Christchurch because “fewer Chinese students there” meant he would have no choice but to fully immerse himself in the new environment.
And what an immersion it was. Luke credits his first years at Linwood High School as the perfect place to experience “an excellent introduction to the New Zealand way of life” and in his first year in New Zealand, he was playing on the wing for Linwood High School’s First XV rugby team!

“I wasn’t very big and didn’t know the rules of the game when I arrived, but I had some wheels back then.” Luke explains. If it looked like trouble was coming my way, I’d just try to outrun it!” But he also knew he had to prove himself to his teammates. Once, while tackling his opposite wing, a strapping Samoan teammate joined in and sent them all to the ground. “I felt something hot dripping down my forehead but charged straight back into the ruck, only to be dragged off the field and sent to the hospital.” Three stitches later, he knew he had earned the respect of his teammates and become ‘one of the boys’.
Luke credits his school experience with developing his self-belief and preparing him for what was to come, through his university years and beyond.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Canterbury, he relocated to Wellington to join the banking industry, and completed a Master in Applied Finance from Victoria University of Wellington. He then continued on with his quest for lifelong learning and experience by achieving qualifications in Sustainable Finance, Te Reo Māori, Medical Co-Response, Citizen diplomacy and Urban Fire and Rescue, and volunteering for a number of causes.
His banking experience broadened, and several promotions later he joined Kiwibank in Auckland, leading the development of its International Strategy and Trade Finance offering, and working closely with NZ Inc partners to help New Zealand exporters and importers with risk mitigation and working capital funding.
Nowhere has his quest for a challenge been more evident than in his decision to become a volunteer firefighter 10 years ago.
“My younger self had been watching ‘Spiderman’ and saw Peter Parker leap into a burning building to save the day. At the time I thought, ‘I wonder if I could do that?’ Then I heard a call for volunteers from the NZ Fire Service on the radio while driving to work so decided to contact my local fire brigade in Seaview, Lower Hutt.”
“I thought I might be the first Asian volunteer in the station, but I was beaten to it by a Chinese lady.”
“The Fire Service is where you find the real New Zealand,” says Luke.
“Teachers, accountants, plumbers, builders, people from all walks of life - all bonded by the same commitment to serve their community. The camaraderie and environment was addictive.”
There, with the support of Fire and Emergency New Zealand, he completed the Sky Tower Stair Challenge with fellow firefighters from across the country to raise funds for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.
Scaling 1103 steps and 51 flights of stairs in full fire-fighting gear with a steel cylinder on his back was one of the most physical tests he has put himself through.
1,103 steps and 51 flights of stairs behind him, Luke was happy to complete the Sky Tower Stair Challenge - “Man of Steel” with other firefighters dressed in full gear with steel cylinders on their backs to raise funds for leukaemia and blood cancer in New Zealand.
“I have benefitted so much from all the opportunities and adventures since coming to New Zealand, especially from my volunteer roles. It’s a small way I could repay my second home for its kindness.”
“I hope I can encourage more international students and members of our diverse ethnic communities in New Zealand to become volunteers and join activities that benefit the community. There is so much we have to offer, and the reward in terms of friendships and life skills is amazing.”

Luke Qin’s journey as an international student began with a desire to immerse himself in a new environment. Grateful to his family, friends, colleagues, and mentors for the opportunities and adventures New Zealand has given him, he takes pride in being able to go home whichever way he travels between his ‘little shire’ in Sichuan and ‘Middle Earth’ New Zealand.

It is inspiring to learn what they’ve achieved since graduating in New Zealand and to hear real-life examples of New Zealand’s unique approach to learning.”
New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, Wendy Matthews, also spoke at the awards ceremony.
“The quality of New Zealand education can be seen in the quality of our graduates, and these alumni are examples of the globally engaged students New Zealand aims to produce,” she said.
“New Zealand is committed to helping build the future leaders of Vietnam. We are proud of our alumni and the New Zealand alumni community, who have come to be affectionately known as the ‘Kiwi mafia’. Alumni play an integral role in the New Zealand-Vietnam bilateral relationship, which celebrated its 45th anniversary this year.”
Vietnam and New Zealand first established diplomatic ties in 1975. The countries’ education relationship stretches back even further to the 1960s, with Vietnamese students having come to New Zealand since the first days of the Colombo Plan.
Today, Vietnam remains an important market for New Zealand’s international education sector. Vietnamese students make up the seventh biggest cohort from a single country. In 2019, 3,040 Vietnamese students studied at New Zealand institutions, up 10 percent from the year before. Of the 3,040 students, 35 percent studied in the universities, followed by schools (28 percent). The number of Vietnamese students studied in schools and universities increased 29 percent and 9 percent respectively from 2018 to 2019.
