  • Building agricultural links with Japan through education

    “Stereotypes remain strong in Japan when it comes to farming - predominantly male, manual labour and rural. Through bespoke education programmes, we aim to increase awareness of agriculture as an attractive business for both men and women,” says Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Director of Education, Japan.  

    On 22 December 2021, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao joined Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in hosting a luncheon for students and teachers from Osaka Nohgei High School.  This agricultural high school won the “New Zealand Embassy” prize in the National Agricultural High Schools Website Competition. The competition, organised by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) Young Farmers and Women Division and Keio University, started in 2017.  

    The competition aims to support future generations of farmers, revitalise Japan’s agricultural sector and increase productivity through greater use of technology. The New Zealand Embassy supports the competition each year by offering a gift of kiwifruit from Zespri and hosting a luncheon at the Embassy for the winning school. 

    ENZ has facilitated opportunities for Japanese agricultural students and farmers to study in New Zealand on scholarships since 2014.  Following the signing of the partnership agreement between Education New Zealand and the Hokkaido Board of Education in 2020, ENZ and MPI representatives based in Tokyo called on the Hokkaido Board of Education in 2021 to discuss the Agricultural School Exchange Programme, which aims to provide future generations of Hokkaido and New Zealand farmers with professional development and international friendship opportunities.

    The programme, scheduled to get underway in 2023, will see Hokkaido students placed in New Zealand secondary schools with a focus on learning about the benefits of New Zealand’s pasture-based dairy farming and support for women in farming. 

    These programmes build on visits to Taranaki and Southland several years ago by Japanese female agricultural students, to study at secondary schools and experience homestays, in order to gain insights into the local farming industry and to learn about how women take leadership roles in the primary sector. The programme was supported by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, in consultation with New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry for Primary Industries and ENZ, and was administered by the Japan Agricultural Exchange Council.  

    Misa says ENZ and MPI are continuing to work together to encourage Japanese students and farmers to change their ways of thinking around farming.

  • New Zealand top of the world in university sustainability stewardship

    New Zealand universities have come out on top of the world for sustainability stewardship in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024. 

    New Zealand universities’ approach to sustainability and equality has been announced as world-leading by Times Higher Education (THE) in its most recent Impact Rankings (2024). The stewardship rankings saw New Zealand score an average of 85.3 to come out ahead of Australia (84.4) and Hong Kong (81.9). All eight New Zealand universities participated in the rankings. 

    Now in its sixth year, the Impact Rankings is the only ranking system in the world that measures universities’ contributions to the United Nations’ Sustainability Goals (UN SDG’s). The Rankings assess the commitment made by universities to sustainability across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.  

    In topping the table for sustainability stewardship, New Zealand’s universities have scored well against indicators such as tracking food waste and having sustainable food choices on campus (SDG 2), the proportion of senior female academics (SDG 5), having water reuse policies and measurements (SDG 6), ensuring energy efficiency with renovations of buildings (SDG 7), and guaranteeing a living wage (SDG 8). 

    New Zealand universities also came second equal in the world against sustainability outreach, meaning high scores were achieved for contributing to policies addressing poverty (SDG 1), collaborating with health institutions (SDG 3), providing programmes for the local community to learn about energy efficiency (SDG 7), participating in cooperative planning for climate change disasters (SDG 13), and providing expert advice to government (SDG 16). 

    ENZ’s Acting Chief Executive Dr Linda Sissons welcomed the results and said the global recognition for New Zealand’s universities working hard to make a positive impact in the face of pressing environmental and social challenges world-wide was significant  

    “New Zealand’s education system is guided by Kaitiakitanga (the Māori concept of guardianship). This principle instils a deep sense of connection to our land and a commitment to ensuring its health and vitality for future generations.  

    "Kaitiakitanga informs the approach taken by our universities to resource management, conservation, and sustainable development that all contribute to the UN’s SDGs particularly in the areas of food security, bioenergy, sustainable urban development, and climate change,” said Dr Sissons. 

    Dr Sissons added “It is incredibly positive to have our approach to sustainability stewardship and outreach recognised as world leading. This is particularly important to us as we know that students around the globe are increasingly prioritising environmental and social responsibility and choosing to study at institutions that align with their personal values.” 

    In this year's Impact Rankings, a record 2,152 universities from 125 countries/regions were assessed. Progress is measured for each of the individual 17 SDGs, and across the goals as a whole. View the full Impact Rankings 2024 results here.

  • New Pastoral Care Code of Practice for Tertiary and International Learners Released

    Today, the Government released a new Code of practice for the pastoral care of tertiary and international learners, to take effect by 1 January 2022, as required under the Education and Training Act 2020.   

    This revised Code is the product of many conversations, engagements, emails, phone calls, and hui.  We are thankful to everyone that has spent time to help improve the wellbeing and safety of tertiary and international ākonga. 

    The overall purpose of this work is to develop a system of supports for the wellbeing and safety of domestic tertiary and international learners, through one set of clear rules and expectations for providers that can be tailored to their learners’ needs. 

    We have summarised the key changes and provided links to the new code and Ministerial Press release, below  

    What does the new Code mean for tertiary providers?

    Tertiary providers will need to consider how their overall systems and resources support learners’ wellbeing and safety. 

    It will be important for providers to build and maintain strong relationships with learners and other interested stakeholders to identify and define the issues that are important for their communities and develop appropriate strategic goals, plans and practices around them. 

    Providers are expected to:

    • build capacity across their organisation to engage and empower learners to manage their own wellbeing
    • proactively identify and respond to learners who may face additional challenges as early as possible and tailor extra support to meet their needs.
    • respond effectively in an emergency.

    The new Code continues to focus on outcomes and flexible practices that enable providers to support their learners in ways that best meet their needs.

    What does the new Code mean for tertiary and international ākonga?

    The Code will make providers more accountable to learners, their families and community. The new Code expects tertiary providers to consult with learners, and other stakeholders when developing, reviewing, and improving their strategic goals, plans and practices. It also expects providers to be transparent about their wellbeing structures, strategies, practices and performances.

    What’s changed for international ākonga?

    The new Code covers domestic and international tertiary students and international students in schools. The goal is to ensure consistency within tertiary providers rather than having separate Codes for international and domestic learners in the same provider. The new Code continues to spell out the expectations that apply now for providers regarding the specific needs of international learners. There are no changes to requirements for schools, in New Zealand, who host international students.

  • SIEBA Launches New Agency Registration Service

    SIEBA has launched its new Agency Registration Service to better support education agencies and meet the evolving needs of New Zealand schools. For an annual fee of NZD $150 plus GST, registered education agencies will gain access to services that strengthen their connections with schools and enhance their operations. 

    Benefits include: 

    • Reference Checking: Agencies listed on the SIEBA website will have undergone initial reference checks, helping schools feel confident that they align with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 standards. 

    • Student Placement Service: Agencies can create student listings for individual and group placements, connecting directly with member schools. 

    • Tailored Resources, Webinars, and Professional Development: Agencies will have access to resources and learning opportunities to help them succeed. 

    • Networking Opportunities: Agencies will have the opportunity to expand connections with SIEBA member schools through events such as Onshore Marketing Forums.

  • Call for speakers for NZIEC KI TUA 2023

    NZIEC KI TUA 2023 will be held in Ōtautahi Christchurch from 16 to 18 August 2023 at Te Pae Convention Centre. A welcome function will occur on Wednesday evening followed by two days of conference sessions on Thursday and Friday. 

    2023 marks the 30th time our conference will be held, and this year’s theme is Te Ara Ki Tua – the pathway ahead. As we celebrate this milestone, our theme encourages us to consider how our sector can thrive in the future.  

    We’re calling for speakers to help us explore the following sub-themes:  

    1. Excellent ExperiencesHow can we foster excellent experiences for international students studying with Aotearoa New Zealand? 

    2. Marketing SmartsWhat are the most effective ways to market to and recruit international students?  

    3. Growing GlobalHow can we grow our relationships with international partners?

    An in-person format and early bird registration  

    Subject to pandemic settings, this year’s conference will be an in-person format. Sector feedback revealed a strong desire to return in-person, in part to facilitate kanohi-ki-te-kanohi connections after so many years apart.   

    We are not intending to offer a hybrid option (in-person and virtual format) this year as this requires additional resources to deliver and a hybrid approach results in inferior experiences for both audiences. To support attendance, and in recognition of the impact of Covid-19, a discounted early bird registration rate will be available this year.
