  • Summer plans: what students need to know

    Under current border settings, tertiary-level international students will need to make careful and informed decisions about their plans for the summer period.

    Any international student who chooses to return home (or otherwise leave New Zealand) over the summer break needs to be aware that they are not eligible to re-enter the country to continue study in early 2021 under current border settings. Students facing hardship will need to reconsider whether they should continue to stay in New Zealand or are better to return home.

    International students currently in New Zealand who intend to continue to study in 2021 have the following options at the end of this academic year: 

    • Remain here over the break and continue their New Zealand study next year
    • Find additional summer school study programmes
    • Return home and continue their New Zealand study online next year, if their institution supports this option
    • Return home and cease their New Zealand study.

    Study providers are asked to ensure they are familiar with their ongoing Code obligations over the summer period, and to assist students to understand their options.

    Education New Zealand wants to complement and spread the word about the excellent work the sector and regional economic development agencies are all currently undertaking.

    We are also mindful that remaining in New Zealand will bring challenges for students and so supporting student connection and wellbeing is also a focus over this time.

    At ENZ we are:

    • Creating new NauMai NZ pages, specifically aimed towards keeping students in New Zealand over the summer.
      • The aim of these pages is to provide a central repository of activities and opportunities, addressing key themes of study, recreation, skill development, and connection with other students.
      • They will signpost out to activity happening at a regional and national level, as well as highlighting ENZ-led online initiatives.
      • These pages will be live at the end of September
    • Hosting a Summer in NZ online virtual fair for international students in NZ on 31 October, where regions and contributing organisations will have a chance to showcase summer activities that they are developing and delivering. Students will be able to register via NauMai NZ at the beginning of October.
    • Activating a variety of communications channels to direct students to NauMai NZ and the Summer in NZ fair to maximise awareness of summer opportunities and to gently encourage consideration of further study to those whose programmes may be finishing.
    • Facilitating online events and opportunities to support student wellbeing and connection over the summer period.

    We look forward to showcasing the fantastic experiences for students here in New Zealand over summer 2020/2021, building their capability, and supporting their wellbeing and connection to Aotearoa New Zealand. Further information will be available in the coming weeks.

  • New Zealand and China share cultural connection through conservation

    In many ways New Zealand’s management of protected lands is world-leading, but there is still much to learn from others. Collaboration is key to improving outcomes and shaping policy in the years ahead. Dr Mick Abbott, professor of Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University, has been collaborating with researchers in China since 2014, with support from Education New Zealand’s Tripartite Fund. The fund assists New Zealand universities to join in research partnerships as the “Third Brother” with two Chinese Universities - one “emerging” and the other “established”.

    Dr Abbott has been working with Tsinghua University in Beijing and Kunming University of Science and Technology in Yunnan province on research projects, field trips, workshops, student courses, and the production of bilingual learning materials.

    While China looks to New Zealand for leadership on how to effectively protect pristine environments from the impacts of recreation and tourism, New Zealand stands to learn a lot from how China celebrates its cultural connections with nature, Dr Abbott says.

    “Protected lands in China are associated with cultural value. In Chinese thinking ecological civilisation underpins wider civilisation. They take a holistic view and there are elements in common with Mātauranga Māori (Māori wisdom and world view).

    Cross-cultural thinking important

    Mātauranga Māori can enhance the cultural connection between Maori and Chinese and creates valuable synergies, he says. “Cross-cultural thinking is so important.”

    Key to the success of the long-term relationship was an exhibition Lincoln University curated in Beijing in 2017, showcasing New Zealand’s protected areas and a range of eye-catching exhibits, alongside Lincoln’s research and that of Tsinghua University on the future direction of protected area management. 

    The exhibition attracted 50,000 visitors and kicked off the WildAtlas project which Dr Abbott has spent the past four years developing. WildAtlas is a collection of virtual tours that bring to life the stories of New Zealand’s National Parks and protected areas, both past and present.

    Available in both English and Chinese, WildAtlas is principally used as an educational tool aimed at university students, but Dr Abbott would like to extend its reach to Year 12 and 13 students. “Land issues are really important in this country, and we must understand there are other ways to view the land. We need to broaden the horizons of our students.”

    Conservation experiences a key attraction

    Looking to the future, Dr Abbott says that New Zealand conservation managers will benefit from a better understanding of the type of National Park experiences that are attractive to Chinese visitors.

    “Pre-Covid, China was New Zealand’s second largest inbound tourism market and largest long-haul market. Our conservation areas and national parks are a key attraction.”

    He is using the latest round of Tripartite funding to create a corresponding Virtual Field Tour of the Protected Areas of Yunnan Province, home to Kunming University of Science and Technology.

    Dr Abbott is hugely positive about the relationship which has been built with Tsinghua and Kunming universities through the Tripartite Fund and believes the collaboration will lead to business and investment opportunities in the future.

    “We must foster goodwill and understanding first, share our values, and advocate for them.

    Editor’s note: New Zealand’s involvement in the Tripartite Fund dates back to 2005, when the New Zealand and Chinese Ministries of Education agreed to formally support and promote tripartite relationships between New Zealand and China, in which a New Zealand university is joined as the ‘third brother’ to an existing ‘two brothers’ arrangement.

    CHINA

    China’s Ministry of Education: Utilise the advantages of cooperation in running schools to solve the problems of studying abroad

    To tackle these challenges, the Chinese Government responded quickly to pressing issues raised by its students.

    Amongst all the interventions put forward, the expanded enrolment of Sino-foreign cooperation in running schools (hereafter referred to as joint programme or JP) attracted the greatest attention from the public.

    According to the Q&A Session, Chinese students who are unable to travel overseas to pursue their study can either enrol in online learning organised by their foreign institutions (the recognition of their foreign qualification will not be affected), or the students who are enrolled with foreign universities will now have the chance to study JP at Chinese institutions.

    The increased enrolment in JPs will not be included in the national unified enrolment plan, and will not take up the original enrolment quota of the higher education establishments. After completing their studies, students who meet the academic requirements will only be awarded a degree certificate from the foreign university.

    If the student still would like to pursue their study overseas as soon as border restrictions are lifted, they should choose online learning by their foreign university, as indicated by China MoE.

    About 90 JPs and joint institutes, including EIT, are on the list for expanded enrolment. The Master in Applied Finance programme offered by AUT and Zhejiang University of Economics and Finance is currently the only NZ programme that is on the list.

  • How NauMai NZ helps us improve the international student experience

    Background

    NauMai NZ provides a digital home for international students who have chosen to study in New Zealand, and provide real-world information, support and expert resources to better enhance their student experience.

    Since its launch in mid 2019, NauMai NZ has had over 220,000 users and 300,000 separate user sessions with an average bounce rate of 16 percent (very positive by industry standards). The NauMai NZ database has grown to over 8,700 students.

    Our challenge this year has been to ensure NauMai NZ remains fit for purpose in the face of the extraordinary events of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The COVID-19 response

    The COVID-19 crisis upended our personal and professional lives. International students, far from home had to grapple with a raft of new challenges.

    In response, a dedicated NauMai NZ COVID-19 page was launched eight months ago. Written in plain English, it is regularly reviewed and pulls together government information directly relevant to international students in New Zealand.

    To ensure reach to the large Chinese student cohort in the country, this page was also translated into simplified Chinese.

    An associated Stay well, stay connected page was launched at the same time to support student wellbeing during lockdown and beyond. It provides context for likely emotional responses, provides proactive solutions and links to expert support resources. To date, these pages have been viewed over 60,000 times. 

    Throughout this challenging year, other content has continued to be developed and delivered, including:

    New pages will support those international students remaining in New Zealand over the summer.

    These pages will highlight a range of activity and opportunities, including:

    • recreation activity across the country
    • links to summer programmes that have been developed for international students, and
    • information to support wellbeing and connection

    On Saturday 31 October, ENZ will deliver a virtual fair (‘Your Great Kiwi Summer’) for students, providing tasters on a range of summer opportunities and signposting out to further information.

    Subject experts, fellow international students and alumni from our Prime Minister’s Scholarships programmes will present on the day.

    Being online will ensure equity of access to students across the country. Students will be able to register for the fair via the new Summer in NZ NauMai NZ pages.
