  • Threads of Heritage exhibition highlights enduring New Zealand-India creative partnership

Auckland‑based design school Whitecliffe recently hosted Threads of Heritage, a vibrant exhibition celebrating global collaboration between Whitecliffe and India’s National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

The exhibition showcased student work inspired by India’s rich textile traditions, developed through an intensive academic collaboration supported by the Indian Ministry of Textiles. Through hands‑on learning with visiting NIFT academics and master artisans, students explored sustainable craft practices while translating cultural heritage into contemporary design outcomes.

Speaking at the exhibition, Whitecliffe Chief Executive Officer Dr Fay Amaral highlighted the value of international collaboration in creative education.

“Threads of Heritage reflects the very best of what creative education can achieve when students are supported by strong academic leadership and a deeply committed professional team,” Fay said.

“The exhibition speaks to the confidence, curiosity, and cultural intelligence of our students, and to the power of international collaboration in shaping designers who are both globally aware and creatively courageous.”

Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) Group General Manager International and Sector Engagement, Sahinde Pala said the partnership between Whitecliffe and NIFT is a great example of how sustained connections deliver meaningful outcomes over time.

“Whitecliffe’s long‑standing relationship with NIFT shows what’s possible when institutions invest in partnerships and people get to know each other over many years. These collaborations aren’t just about programmes, they’re about sharing cultures, learning from one another, and building trust. That’s what really strengthens New Zealand’s global relationships.”

The partnership continues to build momentum, with Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia students set to travel to India in June to visit NIFT, further strengthening two‑way academic exchange between New Zealand and India.

  • New Zealand showcased at Expo Exterior and to leading Chilean universities

At Expo Exterior, ENZ Director of Engagement Javiera Visedo joined a governmental panel on the topic ‘Bridges to the Future: Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, allies of Chilean talent’.

Javiera spoke alongside Austrade Director of Education, Scott Bennet; Embassy of Ireland Deputy Head of Mission, Fergal Horgan and Blue Studies International Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Palacios.

The expo provided an excellent platform to connect with students and families eager to explore global opportunities, highlighting New Zealand’s position as a welcoming and inclusive study destination.

From L to R: ENZ Director of Engagement Javiera Visedo, alongside fellow panellists; Austrade Director of Education, Scott Bennet; Embassy of Ireland Deputy Head of Mission, Fergal Horgan; and Blue Studies International Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Palacios.

In addition to Expo Exterior, ENZ participated in international fairs at Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Universidad San Sebastián in Concepción.

The fairs gave ENZ a valuable chance to talk directly with students, parents, and academics, helping strengthen relationships with potential to develop new partnerships and long-term collaboration between New Zealand and Chile.

Director of Engagement Javiera Visedo said this activity contributes significantly to ENZ’s strategic objectives under the International Education Going for Growth plan, particularly in boosting brand awareness.

While New Zealand enjoys a strong reputation in Chile, competition in the international education market is intense. By being present at these events, we connect with prospective students and build trust with parents and academic leaders who often influence study decisions,” she said.

  • New research shows New Zealand is a top‑three study choice for international students

The latest Global Brand Health and Awareness Survey found that 22 percent of prospective international students now place New Zealand in their top three study destinations, achieving the target set out for 2034 in the Government’s International Education Going for Growth Plan, nearly a decade early.

ENZ’s key focus is to bring New Zealand’s education brand to life internationally, highlighting the factors that most influence student choice, highquality providers, great student experiences, and strong graduate outcomes.

ENZ Acting Chief Executive Dr Linda Sissons said the findings show New Zealand is increasingly being seriously considered, not just recognised.

“This research shows New Zealand is firmly positioned alongside established global study destinations,” Dr Sissons said.

“What matters most is preference – a strong signal of intent – and we are seeing that grow across a wider range of markets.”

The survey expands brand tracking beyond the traditional “Big Four” markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada to a broader group of 11 global study markets, offering a clearer picture of New Zealand’s competitive position.

Across these markets, preference for New Zealand is growing across its priority markets, supporting a more diversified and resilient approach to growth.

Awareness of New Zealand as a study destination is high at 79 percent across key source markets, on par with leading European and Asian destinations.

Dr Sissons said while awareness is an important foundation, preference is a stronger signal of genuine student intent.

“Awareness of New Zealand has been consistently strong. What’s particularly encouraging is seeing more students now move beyond awareness to actively considering and showing a preference for study in New Zealand,” she said.

The findings, which build on strong growth in New Zealand’s international student enrolments in 2025, excellent student experience results and strong public support for international education, will also inform ENZ’s 2026-27 market planning and investment decisions.

The full 2025 Global Brand Health and Awareness Survey will be published on ENZ’s IntelliLab, alongside market‑specific insights and a sector briefing.
