  • Prime Minister welcomes international students

    One of many welcome events around the country since our borders reopened at the end of July, the ceremony was attended by more than 70 students, as well as representatives of UoA and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ). It was an emotional moment for some of the students, who had been waiting a long time for the opportunity to study here.

    Tū Ngātahi pins were presented to international students Petchpiangpor Sueasuwan from Western Springs College; Kyeongmin Kang from English Language Academy; and Ankeeta Karmakar from UoA by the Prime Minister, Minister Hipkins and UoA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dawn Freshwater respectively.  

    ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson explained the significance of the Tū Ngātahi pins, which you can read more about here.  

    The formal welcome was followed by morning tea, with further exchanges of Tū Ngātahi pins and opportunities for photographs.

    International student Malina Grube from the University of Auckland spoke about her experiences here, and her involvement in the kākahu project.

  • 2016 Code of Practice resources now available

    A key piece of the collateral is a special PDF that has been designed to make the Code of Practice more accessible to the sector – specifically signatories, agents, international students and their families, and relevant agencies.

    Alongside this, NZQA has created a brochure that summarises the Code and provides important information for international students (at both a secondary and tertiary level), and their families and caregivers.

    The pdfs and brochure are available in English as well as Arabic, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, simplified Chinese, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese.

    After widespread consultation across the sector, NZQA has also developed a Code of Practice toolbox, with the intention of helping signatories meet their obligations. The toolbox includes examples of good practice collected from around the sector that can be tailored and applied to different organisations.

    These resources are available here on the NZQA website.

    The Code of Practice toolbox can also be found on the NZQA website. It will develop over time, reflecting the material submitted by the sector.

  • Events season wraps up in the Philippines

    Ben Burrowes, ENZ’s Regional Communications & Strategic Relations Manager for South East Asia, said the events were a fantastic way to sign off on a successful year in the Philippines.

    “The market has not been without its challenges in 2017 but we’ve made some great progress in shifting perceptions away from a migration focus on New Zealand to promoting our world-class offering for high-value students,” said Ben.

    “Much of that has been achieved through building networks with local and international schools. Our latest series of school roadshows, in which we were joined by a number of New Zealand providers, built some strong partnerships particularly as we look to recruit the new K-12 Filipino graduates into our tertiary system.”

    ENZ also co-funded three successful agent-led fairs with Golden Summit Immigration Consultancy (Cebu), IDP (Manila) and Fortrust Education Services (Manila) with more than 25 providers attending. The feedback from all providers was very positive and the events were well attended – particularly the Fortrust fair, which attracted more than 2,200 visitors.

    Close to 100 local guidance counsellors and career advisors attended a training session hosted by Unitec, which included a soft-sell presentation on New Zealand’s world-class education offering.

    “This growing network of local counsellors and career advisors is proving valuable, as they  have a strong influence on prospective students,” said Ben.  

    “We’ll continue to work with them closely as we focus on recruiting a greater number of Filipino students into our undergraduate programmes.”      

    ENZ also generated some great media coverage, a highlight being an NZ Inc. media roundtable in Cebu which included David Strachan (the New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines), Hernando Banal (New Zealand Trade Commissioner), Steven Dixon (Tourism New Zealand’s Regional Director), Catherine Albiston (Immigration Advisors Authority) and ENZ’s own John Laxon, Regional Director – South, South East Asia & the Middle East.

  • INAKL ambassadors welcome

    It is an exciting milestone for the INAKL programme, which is a key project for Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development – which drives the growth of the international education through its specialist team Study Auckland.

    The ambassadors will regularly blog about their experiences as an international student in Auckland on a new site which went live this week.

    Ketaki Khare was among the ambassadors who were formally announced by Auckland Mayor Len Brown at an international student function held at Auckland Zoo last month.

    As well as being a student ambassador, Ketaki is among 10 Indian students awarded the New Zealand Prime Minister’s Sports Scholarships for 2015. She is a member of the Indian women’s rugby team, is India’s first female rugby referee and the first Indian woman to pursue a professional career in rugby.

    Ketaki Khare says: “Being an INAKL International Student Ambassador is an amazing opportunity to view this magical city in all its glory and it gives me immense pleasure to be able to write about all my experiences.”

    Birgit Hermann, Project Manager – International Student Experience, says: “The ambassadors’ role is to experience everything Auckland has to offer and talk about them to international students who are here or may come here.”

    The event at Auckland Zoo was the second in a series of INAKL events organised by Study Auckland for the region’s international student community. Some international students also enjoyed an INAKL group attendance at an Auckland Blues rugby game last month, and a recent Immigration New Zealand seminar about how they could potentially make Auckland their permanent home.

    The programme kicked off with the resoundingly successful International Student Welcome held at The Cloud in March, which attracted about 2,400 students.

    “The recent immigration seminar was fully subscribed within 10 hours and the INAKL Facebook site reached more than 2000 likes this week. The programme is achieving great results, but we would like to see it continue to grow and benefit students,” says Birgit.

  • NZ publishers optimistic about Korean market

    Korea is the world’s tenth largest publishing market, valued at an estimated NZ$5.4 billion. Children’s books enjoy the largest market share at 16 percent – if multi-volume sets were included the children’s book would account for 30 percent of the total market.

    “We’ve had 17 one-on-one, high-quality meetings over the two days of our visit thanks to Education New Zealand having done a lot of preliminary scoping in advance. The reception at the New Zealand Embassy in Seoul was a further opportunity to build networks, and was well attended,” said David Glover, Publishers Association of New Zealand’s project manager responsible for the trade mission to Korea.

    “The Korean education publishing market is both sophisticated and highly competitive. Publishers have good knowledge of what other major countries such as the US and UK have to offer. So it was very encouraging that so many local publishers took the time to meet visiting New Zealand publishers.”

    Joy Allcock of MJA Publishing found that travelling in a group with support of ENZ was helpful in opening the right doors.

    "In Seoul, David Glover and Onnuri Lee [ENZ Market Development Manager]did an incredible job – the visit was well-organised and researched. The people I met were preselected and were already interested in the product. They were ready to provide helpful feedback," said Joy. 

    In Hong Kong, Joy was invited to present to 200 early childhood teachers by the Bureau of Education, an opportunity that would not have been offered if she had been visiting as a single company.   

    David noted that selling our learning material to Asia is challenging.

    “It is clear that NZ publishers will have to adapt their materials quite extensively to local market conditions if they wish to succeed here. But initial feedback from the visiting publishers is very positive and there are a number of good leads to follow up and hopefully turn into long term contracts,” said Glover.

    The four educational publishers, ESA Publications, Lanky Hippo Publishing, MJA Publishing, and Wendy Pye Publishing visited Korea and were joined in Hong Kong by academic publisher NZCER before all travelling to the Taipei International Book Exhibition 11 – 16 February 2015.

  • Keynote speakers inspire at NZIEC

    That was the theme of the 27th New Zealand International Education Conference, held in Wellington on 9-10 August.

    Three keynote speakers gave inspirational addresses to packed audiences at Te Papa.

    Making a global impact

    Yoseph Ayele, chief executive of the Edmund Hillary Foundation, kickstarted the conference by exploring how to make a global impact from New Zealand.

    He gave four practical tips for bringing global citizenship into international education:

    1. Create experiences, rather than content.

    2. Learn to learn. Create an environment where everyone in your organisation is able to see themselves from other people’s perspectives.

    3. Teach your values. Rather than focusing on practical skills, teach students key values such as manaakitanga or innovation.

    4. Invest in diversity. Think about attracting students who may not be able to afford to study here, but who would greatly benefit from a New Zealand education and would want to give back.

    Understanding online behaviour

    Dr Shanton Chang, from the University of Melbourne, shared his knowledge of the online behaviour of students moving between countries.

    His insights included:

    • Providing the right information at the right time to students is crucial.
    • Digital literacy is patchy and often limited to Google searches – even for ‘digital natives’. Don’t assume students will find the information you put online.
    • The layout and visual cues of websites often vary between cultures. Even downloading lecture notes can be a struggle for international students. If you want them to use your website, show them how.
    • Most of us have 7-10 websites we visit frequently. International students may continue to visit their favourite sites from home more than any other sites, particularly if they’re feeling isolated.

    “Put it online and they will come? That is nonsense,” says Dr Chung. “We need to unpack that myth and engage properly.”

    Developing partnerships

    Anna Curzon, chief partner officer at cloud accounting software company Xero, gave advice on developing partnerships to become more globally successful.

     She challenged the audience to ask themselves five important questions:

    1. What is your purpose?
    2. What are you awesome at?
    3. What are the experiences in your value chain that will achieve your purpose?
    4. Do you need to build, buy or partner?
    5. If you need to partner, do you have the right people and culture to grow the relationship? 

    In his address to the conference, Education Minister Hon Chris Hipkins described global citizens as people who can “study, work and live across cultural and national boundaries”.

    For those of us educating the next generation of global citizens, the three areas covered by the key speakers are important elements to consider as we continue to connect New Zealand to the world.

  • Dr Jason Fox joins NZIEC

    Dr Jason Fox is a self-described “modern day wizard-rogue,” author and leadership adviser, who uses his expertise in motivation design to show leaders how to unlock new ideas and move beyond the status-quo in order to remain relevant.

    At NZIEC, Jason will discuss how to ‘Lead an International Education Quest’.

    “I'm very much looking forward to joining you at NZIEC this August,” says Jason. 

    “Nearly everything in the international education industry is changing, and faster than ever before. To build for the future, we need something different. It’s time to lead a quest.”

    Sam Mackay, ENZ Strategic Projects Manager says Jason is sure to stimulate some interesting thoughts and discussions over the course of the conference, and will be delivering this year’s opening keynote as well as the closing address.

    “This means Jason will be engaging with delegates over the course of the conference, and will be on hand to draw everything together after two days of discussions and debate,” says Sam.

    “You won’t want to book an early flight!”

    We’ll have more keynote and plenary speaker announcements to make before registrations open in May. NZIEC 2017 will be held at SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland on 22 and 23 August.

  • Kiwi coaches train Tokyo students

    The GOE Rugby Demo Day was held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Oizumi High School. It was hosted by ENZ in partnership with Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education and Street Rugby Alliance, a foundation led by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, dedicated to the development of rugby in conjunction with Japan’s hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2019.

    Two coaches from the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union came to Tokyo to lead the rugby training: Mike Rogers, CEO of Bay of Plenty Rugby Union and Wayne Brill, International Programme Manager and Campaign Manager for the Bay of Plenty Steamers. Together, they led the enthusiastic high school players in an intensive rugby training session on the field. 

    The coaches also participated in a series of media interviews including a local TV station and called on government agencies such as Japan Rugby Football Union and the Sports Agency.   

    Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, said the event was a huge success, and contributed enormously to New Zealand-Japan education relations.

    “Demo Day provided an excellent opportunity for our government partners to see the actual delivery of the programme and see the quality of New Zealand’s education and sports offerings,” said Misa.

    “I can definitely see the heightened interest in rugby in Japan, and it was great timing for ENZ to promote the GOE programme together with Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, an experienced rugby provider that also works closely with Education Tauranga.” 

    “Students were so enthusiastic that we finished the programme by high-fiving each other and saying ‘kia ora’!” 

    GOE Rugby was launched in 2014 in response to the Japanese government’s goal to improve the English language skills and sporting capacity of Japan’s young people, in preparation for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics.

    ENZ looks forward to promoting New Zealand’s sports and English learning package in Japan by leveraging New Zealand’s strong country branding via the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
