• NZIEC 2018 showcases global citizenship

  Two Ministers attended: Minister of Immigration, Hon Iain Lees-Galloway, spoke about the Government’s changes to post-study work rights for international students, and Education Minister, Hon Chris Hipkins announced the International Education Strategy 2018-2030. Both Ministers spoke of the Government’s confidence in the bright future of New Zealand’s international education future.

  Master of ceremonies, award-winning journalist Miriama Kamo, kept conference moving with humour and poise. She interviewed three international students on their experiences living and studying in New Zealand.

  

  Yuki Sugito from Japan came to New Zealand after being interested in the All Blacks at the 2015 World Cup. Ada Wang from Nanchang, China, who is studying a Master’s degree at Victoria University, told us about the case she took to the Tenancy Tribunal and won. Angelique Viola talked about leaving behind a business and career in her native Philippines to study accounting at WelTec. All three are enjoying their lives and studies in New Zealand – and Kiwi food featured strongly, most especially their love for fish’n’chips.

  

   

  

  We learned from Shanton Chang about the digital journeys of international students. And we became one of New Zealand’s top trending topics on Twitter.

  Delegates enjoyed a taste of Brazil at the NZIEC Carnival on Thursday night. 

  

  NZIEC Country of Honour host, Brazilian Ambassador HE Paulo Camargo, spoke movingly of the connections between Brazil and New Zealand. 

  

  Surprise poet Karlo Mila delighted guests by pulling together two days of intense discussions in a poem specially commissioned for NZIEC 2018.

  The largest number of industry presenters inspired, debated and informed delegates across six breakout streams providing new insights for improving the student experience, making a mark online, collaborating to win – and more.

  And delegates took up the plentiful networking opportunities with gusto – many a korero was observed in the conference environs!

• Celebrating Women of the Future with India

  Women leaders from New Zealand and India shared inspiring stories at the event, discussing equity and the inclusion of women in society.   

  ENZ announced a range of initiatives to inspire young women and enable them to experience cross-cultural values and learning:   

  • Virtual India Immersion programme for New Zealand-based tertiary students, focussed on enhancing knowledge of Indian culture and business environment. Students interested in taking up this programme can apply here by 30 April. Find out more here.
  • 10 virtual micro-internships, in partnership with the University of Auckland, for female undergraduate students from India. Interested Indian students can apply here by Saturday, 16 April. 
  • A virtual exchange programme involving a cohort of 40 high school girl students from India and New Zealand offering the Global Competence Certificate. Details of the programme for Indian students are available here. Applications close on 22 April.  

  Hon Priyanca Radhakrishnan, Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Ethnic Communities opened the summit and encouraged all women to challenge stereotypes and break barriers.  The Minister mentioned that she herself had previously come to New Zealand as an international student.  

  Other speakers included women leaders in education from both countries, as well as Tashi Malik and Nungshi Malik, the twin mountaineering sisters who are winners of New Zealand Prime Minister Sports scholarships and Sir Edmund Hillary Global Impact Visa Awardees, and Miss Malini, a well-known Indian digital influencer.

• Register for China vocational education forum

  The forum brings together government agencies, and industry and education leaders in technical and vocational education from New Zealand and China.

  The aim is for all those involved to share their experiences in developing training institutions, strengthen collaboration between the two countries, and plan the development of model programmes in the sector.  

  This is the 6^th forum which has been held annually in either China or New Zealand under the auspices of the China-New Zealand Vocational Education and Training Model Programme.      

  With at least 52 senior leaders from higher vocational education institutions in China set to attend, ENZ Regional Director China & North Asia, Adele Bryant, says the event is a unique opportunity for New Zealand vocational and technical education leaders to demonstrate how their institutions are fostering critical and creative thinking in students.

  “With ‘The Entrepreneurial Institution’ theme, this year’s forum is a great platform to showcase New Zealand’s strengths in encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship,” Adele said.

  “It’s a fantastic opportunity to share ideas, network and form relationships with leaders from China at a time when they are increasingly looking to New Zealand for solutions.”

  A range of leaders in vocational education in New Zealand – from CEOs and International Directors to anyone involved in developing innovation and entrepreneurship strategies at vocational training institutions – are invited to present at the forum.

  Registration is limited to 50 delegates from New Zealand, with early bird registrations closing 31 August.
